Renowned contemporary artist Koo Young-ran is currently presenting her highly anticipated solo exhibition at Chwihandang in Samcheonggak, Seoul, running from May 18 to May 25, 2026.
Featuring her celebrated "The Harmony" series, the exhibition offers a mesmerizing fusion of calm turquoise, deep blues, and empty white space, seamlessly capturing deep interior emotions and the vibrant vitality of the natural world.
In an exclusive interview with Shovel, a prominent South Korean media outlet specializing in English art news and gallery updates, Koo shared her profound artistic journey and reflections on her creative process.
Grounded in the belief that all art originates from the natural environment, she translates everything she sees, hears, and feels outdoors into an evocative abstract language on canvas, seeking to embody the immense power of nature, the sound of the passing wind, and the shifting colors of the four seasons.
While the concept of harmony is traditionally associated with music, Koo believes that the relationship between humanity and the surrounding environment possesses a grand, intrinsic rhythm of its own.
Before beginning any new canvas, she engages in a silent dialogue with nature, allowing those encounters to guide her hand as she depicts the landscape overcoming winter on the cusp of spring, or captures the potent light and lingering echoes hidden within forest stories.
Through this dedicated practice, the artist invites the audience to partake in a shared moment of ecological healing, continually infusing her canvases with these living narratives.
Luminous, transparent colors flow across the canvas while layered brushstrokes generate an organic rhythm akin to ripples expanding in water, allowing viewers to perceive a continuous, living current within a seemingly static frame.

The artworks within "The Harmony" series communicate directly with the environment, articulating natural phenomena as a cohesive visual symphony.
Within her color palette, Koo utilizes pointillist techniques featuring vibrant oranges and yellows to invoke the vitality of spring alongside abyssal depths, while her meticulous layering technique mirrors the specific temperatures of the changing seasons.
This complex depth of color serves as a metaphor for the infinite nature of time and the intricate layers of human emotion.
Through a liberated technical approach that incorporates expressive brushwork, splashing, stamping, and overlapping lines, she successfully visualizes the subtle acoustics of nature and the motion of the wind.
By maintaining a delicate balance between negative space and dense texturing, her compositions utilize the breathing room on the canvas to contemplate human temporality, transforming her time spent communicating with the wilderness into a source of psychological healing, mental rejuvenation, and creative stamina.
Rather than replicating concrete, representational forms, Koo masterfully unpacks her central theme through a poetic interplay of color, texture, and spatial overlap.

Different emotions, temporalities, and natural elements coexist harmoniously within a singular artistic order, beautifully illustrating the journey toward balance and unity within the complex layers of human existence.
The formal elements provided by the earth have become the very foundation of her life and daily routine, allowing the sounds of the wild and the hues of natural light to serve as her background.
Koo reinterprets these elements into a personal painterly vocabulary, continuously striving to project her unique sensibilities and philosophy onto the cloth.
Through the nuanced interplay of light and shadow, color coordination, pigment density, and varying line weights, she projects a deeply internalized perspective of the world.
Reflecting on her current exhibition, Koo noted that presenting her nature-inspired works within a traditional natural setting has elevated the integrity of the pieces, creating a flawless harmony while offering a restorative experience that will undoubtedly fuel her future creative endeavors.
As an established artist with 15 solo exhibitions and over 150 group exhibitions to her credit, she remains an active and influential member of the Korean Fine Arts Association, the Basil Group, the Contemporary Art Alumni Association, and the Jongno Fine Arts Association.
