    Maria Hoshovska

Ukrainian-born and Kraków-based artist Maria Hoshovska is highlighting emotional depth in painting, capturing the precise moment when a canvas seems to “breathe.” During her recent visit to Korea, Hoshovska spoke about her evolving artistic practice, her foundation in restoration, and the balance she seeks between creative integrity and the contemporary art market.

Hoshovska continues to expand her artistic practice through oil painting, gallery collaborations in Kraków, participation in international art fairs, and audience engagement via social media. “Each of these steps feels like part of the same journey—expanding both the reach and the depth of my art,” she reflects.

The Moment the Painting “Breathes” For Hoshovska, the essence of painting lies in its transformation: “There’s a stage where the canvas feels unfinished, and then one unexpected brushstroke transforms it into something alive.” This moment of presence—rather than perfection—defines her process.

Balancing artistic vision with professional sustainability is central to her journey. By exhibiting at art fairs, collaborating with galleries, and engaging online audiences, she builds visibility while preserving her authenticity. “For me, it’s about finding balance between artistic integrity and building sustainable visibility,” she explains.

Her paintings often explore themes of memory, trauma, and emotion—creating spaces for empathy and dialogue. “My art can be educational by opening conversations. Socially, I hope it encourages deeper understanding,” she notes.

Trained in stone sculpture restoration in Lviv, Hoshovska brings patience, discipline, and respect for history into her practice. This background continues to inform her sensitivity to form, material, and narrative in painting.

Positioning Within Polish Contemporary Art

Hoshovska identifies with Poland’s dynamic art scene while maintaining her own distinct voice. “Polish contemporary art feels very diverse and energetic. My work is close to this spirit, but I also carry my own cultural background and approach,” she remarks.

Global Curiosity

Korea and Italy Inspired by Korea’s blend of tradition and modern innovation, and Italy’s balance between heritage and contemporary dialogue, Hoshovska seeks to build connections across cultures. “Visiting Korea, I hope to open myself to new perspectives and begin building projects that grow within a more global dialogue.”

Emerging yet impactful, Hoshovska defines her practice as a story of emotional truth. With empathy and technique at its core, her art resonates as both intimate and universal. “Art lives when it breathes—and I want to keep breathing with it,” she concludes.
