Newchild is proud to present ‘Unmade’, a compelling group exhibition featuring the works of Romina Bassu, Dustin Emory, Xi’an Kim, and Brittney Leeanne Williams.

The gallery invites the public to the opening reception this Friday, February 6th, from 18:00 to 21:00.

The exhibition explores the conceptual "gap" where traditional imagery fails to represent its intended subject, causing meaning to fracture and shift.

Within this thematic framework, the domestic interior is reimagined as an "unhomely" and psychologically intense space where familiar objects and shadows transform into conduits for anxiety, fantasy, and repressed desire.

Among the featured artists is Romina Bassu (b. 1982), a Rome-based painter whose practice investigates the socio-cultural construction of feminine identity.

Her work scrutinizes how patriarchal narratives and vintage visual languages—specifically those found in mid-century advertising, cinema, and pop culture—shape the perception of the female body.

By recontextualizing common postures and gestures, Bassu reveals the intricate ways in which gender stereotypes are internalized by the individual and reproduced by society.

Bassu’s paintings are noted for their quiet restraint, yet they are charged with an underlying tension that suggests identity is a performance often constrained by rigid societal structures.

Through her art, she translates ordinary domestic scenes into moving meditations on intimacy, psychological fragility, and the weight of emotional inheritance.

This approach aligns seamlessly with the overarching theme of ‘Unmade’, where the balance between the observer and the observed remains perpetually uneasy.

The artist’s formal background includes a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome and an Erasmus scholarship at the Academy of Fine Arts of Seville.

Her professional history is distinguished by notable solo exhibitions, such as Portal Section at Miart 2025 and Panopticon at Studio SALES di Norberto Ruggeri.

She has also participated in prestigious group surveys, including Pittura italiana oggi at the Triennale di Milano and Ciò che vedi at the MART Museum.

A highly decorated figure in the contemporary art scene, Bassu won the Art For Art’s Sake Guidi award in Berlin and has been a finalist for the Cairo Prize and the Francesco Fabbri Prize.

Her career has been further enriched by international residencies in Cape Town, Naples, and Treviso. ‘Unmade’ offers a unique opportunity to view her latest work alongside her contemporaries at Newchild through March 19, 2026.
