The Seoul Museum of Art, celebrating the 110th anniversary of the pioneer of Korean abstract art Yoo Youngkuk, is currently hosting its largest-ever retrospective, Yoo Youngkuk: The Mountain is Within Me, running from May 19 through October 25, 2026, in a landmark collaboration with the Yoo Youngkuk Art and Culture Foundation and the Chosun Ilbo.

This monumental exhibition invites contemporary audiences to imagine the world beyond infinity through Yoo's final masterpiece, 〈Work〉 (1999), alongside his most expansive canvases, 〈Mountain-Red〉 (1994) and 〈Mountain-Blue〉 (1994). Like a Möbius strip where the beginning and the end are seamlessly joined, these works prompt a deep investigation into the absolute essence of an abstract language that first captured Yoo's visual desire as a nineteen-year-old boy and steadfastly drove his creative engine until he became an eighty-six-year-old master.

Just as earth meets water, line meets color, reason meets intuition, and life merges with work, Yoo’s iconic mountains endure precisely at the intersection where the modern and the contemporary overlap.

Functioning simultaneously as a vanishing point where all physical forms are simplified and a focal point where the gaze expands into an invisible, infinite universe, his painted mountains invite viewers into a landscape where different eras fold into one another.

Ultimately, what we discover within his peaks is a profound mirror of our own lives today, animated by a raw, enduring vitality that his oil paintings continue to breathe into the present.

Acting as both a threshold to this journey and its final destination, the specialized Archive Corner situated at the first-floor lobby entrance performs a dual curatorial role within the exhibition design.

Intended to offer an intimate introduction to Yoo’s lifelong devotion to form, this space displays a rich, tactile chronicle of his biographical timeline, personal photographs, historic newspaper clippings, and vintage exhibition catalogues, all shared with the public through carefully produced facsimiles.

By positioning these historical documents at the gateway, the retrospective allows visitors to absorb the physical reality of the era before directly confronting the sublime, floating geometries of the main galleries.

This archival framing anchors the transcendental qualities of his late-career output in the socio-historical reality of twentieth-century Korea, enriching the viewer's journey through the master's evolving mind.

Ultimately, the collected ephemera underscores how Yoo’s quiet, monastic routine transformed real-world displacement into a universal monument of survival, inviting a modern digital populace to find their own interior grounding within the grand, unwavering silhouettes of his eternal mountains.
